Azaleas, like most shrubs and trees, can be planted in spring or fall. Fall is preferred because the dormant season gives roots time to grow. Summertime heat and drought can cause stress. If you plant azaleas in the spring, be sure to mulch well and water throughout the summer.

Don't plant azaleas in deep shade or scorching sun. Aim for that filtered shade (or part sun and part shade) for healthy plants. Too much sun will shorten bloom time and make for more compact shrubs; it may also encourage plants to fall prey to predatory bugs.

Plant them in dense shade and they won't bloom. A good location is where they receive either dappled sun all day or sun in the morning and light shade in the afternoon. Good places might include spots under trees, or along the north side of your house.

Underplant azaleas with spring bulbs. Make the most out of seasonal moments in your garden. Pair spring-blooming azaleas with daffodils (Narcissus) that flower at the same time; yellow daffodils will enliven the scene, while white varieties with peach-colored corollas harmonize with many color schemes.
